First response:
- Tonal colour palette (greyscale)
- Un-obvious story/meaning
- Moody feel to the image
- Lots of unused space
- Contrast between person and background (structured clothing versus natural background)
The imagery is an advertisement for a designer brand using the media of Photography.
Denotation:
- Singular woman
- Stacked boulders
- Brand logo
- Clear sky
- Reflection on water
- Slight movement in water
Connotation
- Lonely woman
- Movement through water suggests that she's searching for something or someone
- The reflection on the water suggests that it's daytime
- Although it's in greyscale, the clear sky suggests that it's Spring/Summer - featured in a Spring edition of I.D magazine
- Reminds me of a murder mystery story. There's many questions still unanswered about where she is going and who she is looking for
- The stacked boulders surrounding/ hip height water her could be a metaphor that she's trapped/drowning. This could be mentally- is she trying to escape?
- Staring forward at the thing she could be looking for
- Pose looks delicate as if she's creeping towards something
Further Analysis
Under what circumstances was it produced? It was shot in South Africa by Vincent Van De Wijngaard and styled by Nancy Rhode. There's also a short film that goes alongside called "A Mirrors Edge". This is an interesting name as it makes me think that the water symbolises a mirror. I watched the short film after analysing the image and it confirms some of my analysis outcomes: the woman had been searching for something, water and she was also alone. " target="_blank">Anna de Rijk Stars in 3.1 Phillip Lim Spring/Summer 2014 Campaign.
Did any specific ideas or theories inform it's production? 'Raw landscapes', freedom and an 'ethereal journey'
Who was it produced for? Phillip Lim's website says this about the brand and customer "3.1 PHILLIP LIM’S RAISON D’ÊTRE IS PROVIDING BEAUTIFUL EVERYDAY CLASSICS ACCENTED WITH A SENSE OF MADNESS. THE RESULT — COOL, EASY, CHIC LOOKS FOR MEN AND WOMEN THAT EMBODY YOUTHFUL ELEGANCE AND PERSONAL STYLE."
What technology/media have been used and why? Photography has been used for this campaign as it's been produced to mainly be printed in a magazine and this is the most appropriate media. Although illustration is also 2D, it wouldn't represent the brand in an appropriate way. The use of image means that the photographer/creative director can tell a story- inspired by the collection- to the reader/viewer. A photograph also compliments the short film that was made for the same campaign as they're in the same style of black and white.
