Champagne Incident

Jean Paul Goude

kim-kardashian-butt

I felt unnecessary to write about Kim Kardashian's rear, but after the 'movie star' lecture last week I now feel compelled to. Kim Kardashian is not the original. It came to my attention that many think so due to #breaktheinternet, yet in the 1970's nobody could do this, there wasn't an internet to break.

Carolina Beaumont is the woman you see above, and this photo was taken in 1976 by Jean Paul Goude, famous for his unusual images of superstar Grace Jones. Whilst the flurry of rumours circle about Kim Kardashian's extremely tiny waist in comparison to her large buttocks continue, the original of Carolina is completely un-edited as there was no Photoshop to do so at this time. My opinion is strong on negative body image through the media and although Carolina has a tiny frame, it's refreshing to know that this is her natural size, whilst in 2014 adults and children are exposed to the over-edited magazine spreads like Kim's. This falls under objectification of women and the debate over photoshopping.

The Guardian wrote "However, even at the time he was criticised for objectifying the bodies of black women. Kim Kardashian’s enlarged, glazed buttocks show that while his techniques have changed – he almost certainly used a computer – his predilections have not, only now they seem to be shared by the whole of the internet."

The original certainly got criticised; it seemed that he had a race problem telling People magazine that he had "Jungle fever" and that "Blacks are the premise of my work".  To me it therefore seems unusual that Kim would be happy to take part in such a photoshoot as she is married to Kanye West who's African-American- is she aware of the chaos that surrounded the original photo I wonder? Well she did say this to on Australian TV show The Project: "I was so honored and excited to work with [photographer Jean-Paul Goude] because he is a legend, and for me that was something I wanted to do to make myself feel confident."

So was it Kim doing it all for a little confidence boost, or did she really dis-believe the press that the original received?
