First of all, deciding on the fashion era was a challenge. I picked up a book I own called '50 years of every day fashion' where I looked through the era's and the trends came with each new one. The first era I was interested by was the 50's and the new post-ward approach to going on holiday in England. With holidays, came swimsuits and this was a revolutionary movement as before women weren't seen revealing this much skin. So I then searched '50's swimsuits/50's beach etc' and gathered my findings on Pinterest.
I wanted to have different options of fashion era's so I carried on looking through my book and found '60's geometric' which I love due to it's monochrome nature. After repeating the search process on Pinterest I found this a less successful era to look at due to it's exact refinement.
Finally, I searched '70's disco' on Pinterest and the results were electric- original photos from the era filled the dashboard. I decided this was my era and looked through my other books such as 'Icon's of Fashion' and '50 shoes that changed the world'. This was a more unsuccessful search so I then got back online and started to focus my search to allow for my mood board to be filled with different factors from the era, not just fashion. It was obvious that fashion trends had grown and brought people together due to music so I looked more into the club 'Studio 54' and also googled 'soundtrack to studio 54'.
From all of my research I have chosen a photo of Grace Jones dancing at Studio 54 who was a key celebrity of the time, along with another female dancer dressed in a fun dress that would've moved with her as she danced. The mood board also features imagery featured on an original Studio 54 poster of a disco ball as a lollipop. There's also a subtle photograph of a women's legs who's wearing BIBA shoes- a key designer for that era. There's a disc of 'Le Freak' by Chic which was a highly influential and popular song in the seventies my mum tells me! Then to give it a final disco fever, I have layered an original photo of disco balls as a background then overlaid a sparkle on all the images. i've turned down the opacity on all the photos too to soften them, giving a hazy look, similar to the way that the party-goers in the club would've seen as they danced the night away.
Creating a mood board on a fashion era is a fun task for me! I'm confident with recognising fashion era's and sub-cultures as I studied a module at college on this and had to do a similar task. This time I found it more enjoyable with my new knowledge of photoshop. I would've liked to have added my own illustrations to the mood board but I wanted it to have an authentic look which I believe is successful due to all photos being from the era.
i like the approach of creating a moodboard based on decade! i always do mine by color http://fiftytwoeast.com/2015/02/04/visual-journal-pt-10/
