On Tuesday the 6th of January, when we were exiting the F.I.T Museum space, we were approached by a man and woman asking what we were doing that afternoon. Our initial plan was to grab some food then head to 5th Ave so that's what we told them. They asked if we wanted to be part of The Wendy Williams Show to which we all pulled clueless faces, as being British we weren't aware of her status as a talk show presenter.
For a while we tried to shake the people off as we didn't believe they were legitimately giving away free tickets to be in an audience of a popular TV show who was starring Donny Wahlberg and his wife Jenny. Eventually we decided to take a risk and the 7 of us followed the woman to a strange looking building around the block. I would be lying if I said I wasn't anxious when inside the un-glamourous waiting room. There were lots of glamorous women around us, some had dragged along their husbands but it was obvious that people were making an effort to get their faces on television, whereas we were layered up in jeans and coats from being pulled off the street to see it.
We were all crammed into a huge lift and this was definitely the weirdest part. The security man was shouting at everyone to be still and it genuinely felt as if we were being taken to play The Hunger Games. We were all panicking. However, when we reached the top, we entered into a television studio, just like the ones you hear about. There was loud music playing and a DJ getting everyone lively and excited for the show. He was making people have a 'dance off' and they won prizes if they did well. It was very lively and over the top but it was in order to create a buzz amongst the audience for when the camera's started rolling.
The producer then came on the set and explained that she would be stood in front of the audience throughout filming basically telling us what reaction to do. She said that the better the reactions the more chance you had of getting your face on television when it was being aired the next day at 10am. We went along with it when the glamorous Wendy started filming.
The whole process of filming was odd. She did no re-takes but had a 3 minute break in between. The producers moved people around in the audience depending on where Wendy was standing, I'm guessing choosing the better looking people. The producer continued to dramatically shout 'Oooooh' and 'Ahhhhh' and would fake laugh for us to follow. Some parts were genuinely funny and it was incredible to see behind the scenes of American Tv.
I will take away the knowledge that everything isn't as they seem. This television programme was supposed to be 'live' when it clearly wasn't, however it did make good television. See part of the show here where we're in the left side of the audience!
