Since finishing my Street Style brief on looking at how the older generation dress, it has come to my attention that this is a mighty trend for 2015!
I had been inspired to look at the supposed 'age of beauty' from watching the Channel 4 'Fabulous Fashionistas' back in 2013, which highlighted vibrant older women who loved fashion as much as any 20-something. They embraced life and their clothes represented that precisely. My Gran was also my inspiration, she is definitely part of this sub-culture, embracing older life through weekly yoga classes, art classes and shopping with her grand-daughter (me!).
The Fashion world is very much a young one, and whilst years go by and these models always get older with time, a new young generation takes over. But does this really have to be the case? Kate Moss is in her 40's and whilst her modelling career started over 20 years ago, she's still making appearances in all the glossy magazines. However, I was more interested in looking at the over 50's, wondering why Fashion always leaves them behind.
2015 is looking to be the year where Fashion is accepting. I'm not saying it'll be sending your Gran down the runway for SS16, but there seems to be excitement brewing about embracing age AND beauty.
For example, The 'new' face of Celine: 80 year old Joan Didian. Most Celine customers probably don't know the legendary writer, but that hasn't stopped the brand. The 'new face of Nars: 68 year old Charlotte Rampling and 71 year old Joni Mitchell taking Saint Laurent by storm. Selfridges 'Bright Young Things' campaign has also been rebranded as 'Bright Old Things' where they'll be paying homage to the older generation of Londoner's through a photoshoot and even a window in the famous Oxford Street store.
Whilst this is the second post in a week about my street style brief, I feel it's necessary to highlight the obvious trend emerging and how I spotted it before these campaigns were even released!
